The King’s School Robin Hills wins with graphene

ROBIN HILLS – 2015 Grade 10 pupils win R10 000 for their school.

Two of The King’s School Robin Hills pupils placed second in the Materials Science Poster Competition hosted by Wits University. Noel Odhiambo and Njabulo Mbetse won the second place prize of R10 000 with their digital poster on graphene.

The prize-giving ceremony was held on 26 January at the Wits Club, Braamfontein, for the class of 2015 Grade 10 pupils. This is the third year that pupils of The King’s School Robin Hills were one of the top three winning schools in this competition.

Odhiambo and Mbetse commented, “It was very interesting researching a topic that was unknown to us.We both take IT and visual arts and this helped us to put the scientific information into our winning poster. The prize-giving function was nerve-racking as they handed out the certificates ending with the third, second and first prizes but it was worth the wait.”

Every year, the Centre of Excellence in Strong Materials challenges Grade 10 pupils to participate in the competition. This is the ninth year the competition has worked as an outreach programme for the Centre of Excellence. It aims to attract pupils to the field of material sciences and develop their knowledge of properties and the applications of strong materials.
