When the spider bites, when the scorpion stings

JOBURG – Remember these handy spider and scorpion tips when encountering these scary creatures.

Crawling creatures find their way into everyone’s home. Among these many creatures are spiders and scorpions. Jonathan Leeming, a conservationist, professional speaker and author, explained why we should not be afraid when confronted by a scorpion or a spider.

According to Leeming, very few people see a spider bite them therefore it is difficult to identify spider bites. This has resulted in a great deal of misdiagnosis, which created a belief that spiders are a great health risk. The bite from an average spider rarely requires any medical attention. Except for button-spider bites, spider bite first aid aims at preventing the lesion from becoming infected. Antibacterial cream on a suspected spider bite is generally all you need. If you are in doubt, consult your local doctor for professional medical assistance.

The average scorpion sting is similar to a bee or wasp sting. The potency of a scorpion’s venom is not based on colour or size. It is not true that small scorpions are more venomous than larger scorpions. Leeming’s general rule is scorpions with large pincers and thin tails are less venomous than those with small pincers and thick tails.

During the warmer months of the year, male scorpions are in search of females and are often encountered at this time. February is the peak month for scorpion stings. The initial symptom of a scorpion sting is intense localized pain similar to a wasp sting. The venom affects the nervous system, and in extreme cases, scorpion anti-venom is the only treatment.

Leeming added there are many home remedies for mild stings, such as applying petrol, sucking out the venom, heating the sting site and drinking milk, but they are all ineffective. When in doubt about treatment, always seek professional medical advice.

“In Gauteng there is a small reddish-brown scorpion that is often found in bathtubs, showers and sinks. This moisture-loving scorpion is docile, with stings causing symptoms comparable to a wasp sting. Show them the respect that nature deserves and capture these scorpions and release them away from your house,” Leeming said.
