Risidale Primary School deputy principal Carina Porter was excited that pupils contributed 500 bottles which were used to collect water and then transported to the Free State province to help with drought relief.
Pupils recently contributed bottles through their school club, Risidale Community Impact Club (RCIC), which worked with Upcycle’s Investec initiative to donate water.
“The School is very proud of their RCIC pupils. Their club has linked up with an amazing organisation,” explained Porter.
She further explained that the Upcycle’s project aims were to reinvest waste as an alternative to recycling and the latest initiative involved collecting any (polyethylene terephthalate) PET plastic bottles.
“These bottles would be rinsed, filled with water and made ready for delivery to the Free State farmers and families who are stricken with drought,” she continued.
The RCIC pupils gathered at the school hall and received an informative talk by Winnie McHenry from Upcycle.
They learned how those waste products are reinvested into items such as crisp packets to zip bags, glass to candle holders, and water bottles turned into veggie gardens.
“It was also here where pupils proudly handed over the plastic bottles that had been collected from the beginning of term,” concluded Porter.
