Hole dug and left

FERNDALE – Even though the old pipe on Bram Fischer Drive was repaired, the hole still causes problems in the street and sidewalk.

The constant water leak that has been a problem since December 2015, has turned into a pile of sand that obstructs two lanes of traffic on Bram Fischer Drive in Ferndale.

It has been previously reported that pipes are old therefore need to be replaced. Johannesburg Water confirmed that the pipe was 40 years old and weakened to such an extent that it can not be repaired anymore and should be replaced.

A resident said on 10 February that workers from Johannesburg Water came and dug an enormous hole on 23 January, but it has been left like that since then. “They dug up the hole and we never saw anybody from Johannesburg Water again.” The hole has turned into a safety hazard as it forces cars to overtake cars in the other lanes. The pedestrian path is also blocked.

Ward 102 Councillor David Potter said that Joburg Water had recently repaired the burst water pipes along Bram Fischer Drive. “It is very unfortunate that the leaks were fixed and that the entire span of piping was not replaced. The pipe is old and has given problems over a number of years.” He added that Joburg Water is due to backfill the holes and reinstate the road and sidewalk.

“This matter is now urgent. On a recent Ward tour with the City, this issue was identified as being urgent. My office will follow up with the relevant Joburg Water depot,” said Councillor Potter.

External communications officer of Johannesburg Water Eleanor Mavimbela said that she followed up on the resident’s reference number. “The call was only reported yesterday. It’s still open on the system and should be attended to by 12 February,” said Mavimbela. She added that the entity urges residents to continue to assist them in reporting leaks, burst pipes and leaking water meters. “The sooner the problem is logged, the sooner a team can attend to it,” concluded Mavimbela.
