MULTIMEDIA: Pupils entertain audience string by string

RANDPARK RIDGE – Four schools come together to deliver a musical experience of a very high quality.

Violins, pianos, trombones, flutes and drums combined made for an orchestra festival like no other. Trinityhouse Randpark Ridge hosted the Inter-school Orchestra Festival in the school’s great hall on 7 February.

Pupils from Trinityhouse Randpark Ridge; St Stithians College in Sandton; Kingsmead College in Rosebank and the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls in Henley on Klip came ready to entertain music lovers. Riaan Vorster from the department of arts and culture at Trinityhouse opened the event by saying that the children received a talent and that it is an honor to see them using this talent.

The schools played a combination of well-known classical music, but also surprised the audience with modern musical numbers like Run from Snow Patrol and Sorry from Justin Bieber.

The highlight of the evening was when South African composer, Eddy Clayton conducted the massed orchestra, which was a combination of the four schools and their teachers. Clayton said that this is his third year conducting at the orchestra festival. “It is amazing to see the progress being made by the children,” said Clayton. Vorster said that it is such an honor for the pupils to be working with Clayton, because he is such a well-known figure in classical music.

Family, friends and teachers gave a standing ovation after the massed orchestra of 120 musicians ended the event with Lord of the Dance, which featured bagpipes and classical Irish instruments. Clayton said that parents should be proud as this was the result of their children’s hard work.
