Four schools compete in second swim gala for 2016

The Deutsche Internationale Schule Johannesburg played host to a swim gala on 28 January in Auckland Park. Four schools were competing at the gala, Hoërskool Randburg, Northcliff High School, St Peter’s School in Sandton and the Deutsche Internationale Schule Johannesburg.

Neil van de Walt, swim coach of Northcliff High School, said that this is their second swim gala. Pupils from Grade 8 to Grade 12 competed in all of the strokes as well as relay races at the end of the day. According to Van de Walt, Northcliff High School has about 60 pupils competing. Jurgen Brits, swim coach of Hoërskool Randburg said that they have 40 swimmers competing and this is also their second swim gala of the year.

Van de Walt said that this gala can be seen as a trial as they are still trying to sort out teams. “Our biggest rivals, St Peter’s School, is competing today in the two lanes next to Northcliff High School.” Daniel Venter, the swim captain of Hoërskool Randburg said that he has great expectations for his team in the inter-high swim gala that will take place in March.

At the end of each race, which had girls and boys competing, the points for each school were announced. The swimmers, with their coordinated swimwear and swim caps stood in anticipation, behind the starting blocks. The stands were full of supporters, hoping that their school will come out on top.

At the end of the gala, Northcliff High School came out on top with 671 points and St Peter’s School was second with 622 points. The host school, Deutsche Internationale Schule Johannesburg, came out third on 416 points and Hoërskool Randburg was fourth with a total of 333 points.
