Communities unite in water donation

ROOSEVELT PARK – Many communities join hands with Water Shortage SA and donate water and empty containers to areas in need.

Yet another community member from Roosevelt Park has given her time to collect water for areas in South Africa that need it most.

Felicity Lawlor from Roosevelt Park is the Water Shortage SA coordinator for residents who want to drop off water in Roosevelt Park, Linden, Northcliff, Fairland, Melville and Rosebank.

According to Lawlor, she had to find a drop-off point that is central for the residents in these areas. “Our drop-off point is Gonk, a shop in 4th Avenue, Linden. It is a steady drop-off point, because there is always someone there during work hours which is convenient for people to drop off,” said Lawlor.

She said that a Fairland community Facebook page requested water for a farm in need in the North West province. “I had water, just nothing to put it into. So my initial request was for empty containers. It is the main focus of my volunteering.” She added, “There are many people who offer for water to be collected from their boreholes and rainwater tanks, and they are willing to fill up from their taps.” However, she does not have enough containers.

Lawlor said that she is very happy with the support from the community. “Restaurants in Linden are keeping empty water bottles and businesses have donated larger containers and many residents have dropped off both water and empty bottles.

“As a community we have delivered 865 litres of water so far. A further 500 litres should be ready by the weekend,” Lawlor continued. Water Shortage SA has delivered over three million litres of water to drought-stricken areas.

She further asked that people clearly mark the bottles as DW for drinking water – either from the tap or bought, and TW for domestic use and for animal use. “It is not only humans who suffer, but animals as well,” said Lawlor.
