FERNDALE – An incessant water leak has disrupted the lives of residents living on Vine Avenue as they wait for Joburg Water to attend to it.

Residents of Vine Avenue in Ferndale are exasperated by a burst water pipe that they say was repaired only to gush valuable litres of water again.

Jhan Kruger, one of the residents who has been affected by the water leak, explained that the problem has been the same for the past five months, after Joburg Water came to repair the pipe. She said that Joburg Water dug up the paving to get to the pipe and then left the paving as is.

“This is such an inconvenience to all of us, our street alone has seen three burst water pipes already and it takes a while to be attended to,” said Kruger.

Kruger further explained that every time Joburg Water would come to fix a pipe, another section of the pipe would burst. She went on to say that her paving has really suffered and it is now unsafe to enter or exit her house because of the sink hole that has formed.

Ward 104 Councillor Mike Wood said that the issues faced by the residents are due to upgrades that are currently happening around the different neighbourhoods.

Eleanor Mavimbela, external communications officer for Joburg Water, said that the water leak should be attended to by 20 January or the extreme latest, 21 January.

She concluded by urging residents to ensure that when they log a service call, they do so correctly.

“Ensure that the address is correct, give as much detail of the problem as possible and ensure that they get a reference number for each service request that they log so that the right team can attend to it and thus avoid duplication,” said Mavimbela.
