RANDPARK RIDGE – Rand Park High School hosts a candlelight ceremony to welcome their new Grade 8 class.

Rand Park High School hosted a candlelight ceremony on 15 January to embrace this year’s Grade 8 pupils following a week of work and fun activities.

The ceremony was opened by Principal Alan Wilke who welcomed the parents of the new class of Grade 8s to a new year of success for their children. In his speech, Principal Wilke spoke about how the school aimed to incorporate a holistic approach to teaching their children and aiming each year for even bigger success rates, highlighting how pleased he was at the level of quality passes the Matric class of 2015 produced.

He went on to further explain that the level of work ethic shown by the pupils of the school was encouraging and great to be a part of. He also spoke about a policy the schools has incorporated called “book in the bag” that aims to encourage the pupils to have a novel in their bag to read in their free time, jokingly adding that once a child has a lot to keep them busy, the less chances there are that they will get up to mischief.

“Extra murals play a big part in teaching the child,” said Principal Wilke. “The school offers a wide range of sports along with cultural activities such as photo club, chess, cheer-leading and hiking.”

For the ceremony, the Grade 8s walked into a hall in silence and stood with their backs to the audience. The candlelight ceremony had the pupils row by row light their candle as a way to signify their importance in the school. Thereafter they sang their Grade 8 song to an audience of elated parents who watched as their child sang and danced along with the new friends they made.

Zoë Isaac, one of the Grade 8 pupils concluded she had a great first week at the school which was filled with fantastic orientation activities, which made making friends that much easier.
