Back to school tips for teens

JOBURG – Here are some useful tips for teens on how to make their school career a bit easier.

This may not be your first year of school, but the prospect of going back to school, is still daunting. Here are a few helpful tips put together from the website Love to Know to guide teens in creating a better school year.

Get enough rest

Getting enough sleep is one of the most important factors to ensure that you will be alert and able to concentrate during your school day. Make sure you get an eight-hour sleep in every night to be able to perform to the best of your abilities daily. This is extra important if you participate in extra murals such as sport or cultural events that drain more of your energy.

Eat breakfast and lunch

To avoid a sluggish feeling and stay focused during classes, start your day with a healthy breakfast to ensure you have the needed energy to take every day by the horns. If you are not a breakfast eater, snack on a cereal bar, a fruit or make a quick smoothie before you head off to school. Eating lunch is just as important as this will give you that extra kick for the rest of the day. Pack the food you enjoy and if you participate in sport be sure it is something loaded with energy.

Organise subjects with binders

Purchase different coloured binders for every subject. By doing this you will not mix up your notes and worksheets and the chances of losing important papers are less likely. Try getting binders with clear front sleeves so that you can display your weekly timetable at the front of each binder.

Talk to your fellow pupils

Besides the fact that this is a great way of making new friends, it can be beneficial for you to obtain extra class notes or old tests. Talking to your classmates and showing an interest in their lives will make them feel important and that you care about them. By doing this you will make the chances of being pushed out less likely.

Get involved

Look at the various extra murals offered by the school and choose to participate in something you find interesting. Schools offer various sports and cultural activities which will be beneficial to add to your resume at the end of your school career and it is also a great way to exercise both your body and your brain. By getting involved in school activities you will also make your school career more entertaining and fun for yourself.

Attend orientation

If you are in Grade 8 don’t be scared of orientation. This is a fantastic way of learning more about the school and how to find your way. Attending orientation will also allow you the opportunity to make new friends in no time.

Sit in front

It is often mistaken that the losers sit in front of the class but the truth is the pupils sitting in front are the ones paving their way through academics. By sitting in front you avoid the chances of being distracted by other pupils and will be able to hear the teacher more clearly.

Create a homework station

Assign a place at home or if you stay behind after school in a class or in the library, where you will not be distracted. Avoid a place where there are people passing by or at home where your younger siblings play around you. Find a place that is quiet to ensure you can concentrate to the best of your abilities.

Prepare for the next day

Lay out your school clothes, pack your school books and sports clothes and pack your lunchbox the night before. By doing all of this you will avoid the mad rush in the morning and give yourself more time to sleep a little longer or eat breakfast.
