MEC should follow performance system – Sadtu

JOBURG – Sadtu in Gauteng insists there are procedures to follow before principals are dismissed.

South African Democratic Teachers Union (Sadtu) in Gauteng promised that it would defend any of their members against unfair dismissal.

Sadtu’s Gauteng chairperson, Eddie Kekana was responding to the MEC for Education, Phanyaza Lesufi’s comment about the axing of principals of the worst performing schools in the province.

During the announcement of the 2015 provincial Matric results at Rhema Bible Church in Randpark Ridge on 6 January, MEC Lesufi told media that principals of the four worst performing schools in the province would no longer be in their positions when schools reopened.

“The principals of the worst performing schools have kissed principal-ships goodbye,” said Lesufi.

Kekana explained that they would defend their members against unfair dismissal since it was their duty as the trade union. “The MEC has a right in practicing in his position but he is also governed by the legislature,” he explained.

He continued that it was the MEC’s right to make his comments but there was a performance system which should be followed.

“Maybe he’s got another context for his comments and he has a right to comment, but we are not worried that much since we have not been told any member of ours will be dismissed,” he concluded.
