GALLERY: Gauteng celebrates top achievers
RANDPARK RIDGE – Gauteng Department of Education will give top three pupils from townships bursaries to study at the universities of their choice.
Gauteng Province has acquired an overall 84.22 per cent pass rate in the 2015 National Senior Certificate Matric results.
The Gauteng Department of Education (GDE) announced the top 2015 Matric achievers during a ceremony held at Rhema Bible Church North on 6 January in Randpark Ridge.
Mayors from various municipalities in the province, principals, and top pupils, the MEC for Education Phanyaza Lesufi, Gauteng Premier David Makhura and Minister of Basic Education Angie Motshekga were among the stakeholders who attended the ceremony.
Minster Motshekga told pupils that they were among the best in the country. She further explained that 10 districts from the province made the national top 20 of best achievers.
“Forty seven per cent of the progressive learners in the Gauteng Province have passed their exams,” she said.
Pupils from Sedibeng district, Ekurhuleni and Tshwane received most of the awards for top performances.
Premier Makhura commended the civil society groups and trade unions for their involvement in the education of the province.
He said his government was committed to running clean governance in all the districts in the province. “There should be no single citizen in the province who does not feel the presence of the government,” he said.
MEC Lesufi commended all the top achievers and insisted that his department would award the top three pupils from townships full bursaries to study at the universities of their choices.
“We will also thank the minister for initiating the Second Chance Programme to help pupils who failed Matric last year,” he said.
Seventeen thousand pupils failed the 2015 Matric final examination with four under-performing schools in the province. Lesufi said all those under-performing schools were independent schools.

Minet Uys from Afrikaanse Hoër Meisieskool Pretoria acquired position one in the province’s overall performance.
