RANDBURG – Doggy fashion shows, cat of the year, donations. These animal stories gave us hope and made us smile in 2015.

Pets and animals alike make us feel good. They give us hope in times of trouble, they make us laugh when we need to. These animals did just that in 2015. We give you a roundup of the best animal, feel-good stories of Randburg Sun in 2015.

On 12 January, Randburg Sun, sales manager, Daleen Swanepoel, adopted a cross Yorkshire terrier, Jodi from the Randburg SPCA. She became one of the heroes of the Randburg SPCA. Swanepoel called it “love at first sight” when she met her new “baby girl”.

On 7 August the Southern African Cat Council held the Cat of the Year competition at Randpark Golf Club. According to judge Karen Pepler, there were 80 cats from all ages. The cats were judged in a variety of categories. The cat of 2015 was announced as Supreme Champion Pearl Squeaky and her owner is Penny Steyn. Pepler said that the competition also featured some rescued cats and pavement specials.

A Doggy Fashion Parade for charity took place on 29 August. The dogs came out one for one with their owners in elaborate costumes and to top it all off, the dogs received prizes as well. The dogs acted like real models with poses and funny steps.

Pets fight the bulge. From 15 to 19 October was National pet obesity week. Vets around the country teamed up in support of this week by offering free weight assessments in order to curb the increase in obesity in South African pets. Truffles, a cocker spaniel from Constantia Kloof, made it into the finals in a national competition in the Hill’s Pet Slimmer of the Year. Truffles lost 18 per cent of her body weight.

On 31 October the Kya Sand Community Veterinary Clinic provided much-needed care to the community, by helping those who cannot afford basic animal care. Veterinarian Karin Loots said that they helped the animals by dipping, deworming and sterilising them. Loots asked for donations like pet food. The next donation date is on 5 December.
