GALLERY: 2015 school sports round up

RANDBURG – Here are pupils who have excelled in sports.

During the course of 2015, Randburg Sun covered different stories on achievements in school sports.

Some pupils excelled beyond expectation in different sports activities.

Some of the top achievers from schools sport around Randburg, are listed below:

Nicole Smith was ranked third in SA after she participated in the SA School Sprint Championships, in April – May.

In preparation for the Junior World Sprint Championship, Smith took part in the SA School Sprint Championships.

She is a pupil at Trinityhouse Randpark Ridge High School.

In June, Curro Aurora Goju Karate Academy pupils in Sundowner scooped 14 medals in karate championships.

They participated in the Goju Kai Gauteng Karate Championships held in Linksfield.

Rand Park High pupil, Cameron Brunner, hits six for his World Cup indoor team in June.

Brunner (15) was then selected for the U18 World Cup indoor team for South Africa.

In June, tennis player Jessica Portwig from Blairgowrie was selected to represent SA in America during August.

The student at Advantage Tennis Academy was selected as one of the players for the SA school’s U13 tennis team.

She was selected following the SA Inter-Provincial tournament that took place in March.

In July Curro Aurora netball team of U13 took bronze.

Four players Sasha Niemandt, Hunta Irons, Shannay Dammerman and Kiara Elms were selected for the Curro Regional team.

In July, the Blairgowrie Primary School’s U10 soccer team won championships.

The team won the District 10 Johannesburg North League Championships.The team managed to turn up the heat to complete the six-week long soccer season unbeaten.

Two siblings from St Stithians Boys’ College and Girls’ Preparatory School in Bryanston won gold at the karate championship in July.

Nicholas (11) and Claudia Dobson (12) won gold medals at the Karate National Development.

The siblings were selected to represent the Gauteng Karate Federation at the Karate South Africa National Development, SA Open and Elite Championship held at the University of KwaZulu-Natal Old Mutual Sport Hall in Durban.

In August, Laerskool Fontainebleau senior boys tennis team won gold for the second consecutive year.

The boys took part in the Super 12 tennis tournament in Pretoria and achieved first place.

Bushi Seilhleko, Sebastine Watney, Albert Kirsten and Joshua Jooste contributed to the winnings.

Also in August, three pupils from Laerskool Fontainebleau earned provincial rugby colours.

Three Grade 7 pupils Wiehann Theron, Sebastine Watney, and Joshua Jooste were awarded their Golden Lions attire.

Watney (13), was chosen to play for the U13 Lions team at the Craven week tournament.
