Your pets can go on holiday with you

JOBURG – Pets do not always need to stay behind when you go on holiday. Here are 10 tips to assure they enjoy the holiday with you.

It’s that time of the year again and the holidays are around the corner. You may be concerned about what to do with your pets while you go on your well-deserved holiday.

Adora Maddison, receptionist at Struben’s Valley Veterinary Clinic in Wilgeheuwel, said that most of their clients contact a trustworthy family member or pet sitter to look after their pets. These pet sitters would usually live in the holidaygoer’s home to make it easier to look after the pets. “Our clients also contact kennels. There are many kennels which provide 24-hour care,” said Maddison.

If you do not feel comfortable leaving Spotty or Fluffy behind, Merial, an animal health company, released 10 tips about taking your pets with you to the beach.

  • Protect your pets from fleas when travelling to the coast

The coast is the perfect breeding ground for fleas. Some chewable tablets help keep pets flea-free.

  • Always keep a watchful eye over your pets when at the beach

Keep especially dogs away from waves, if they are not used to them.

  • Always clean up after your pets

Do not let them be a nuisance to others.

  • Ensure that your pet has a collar and a tag with your details

If your pet goes missing, these can help someone who finds your pet contact you

  • Take plenty of fresh water with you when you go to the beach

Pets can also dehydrate. Buy a collapsible water bowl to take with you.

  • Be careful when your pets dig

The area where your pet digs can be covered with broken glass, hooks or fish lines. Watch your pets carefully to make sure they don’t injure themselves.

  • Rinse your pets after you return from the beach

To prevent an irritation of sand and salt on your pet’s skin rinse them with clean water.

  • Provide shade to prevent your pet from overheating
  • Take toys along to entertain your pet

Toys like tennis balls, frisbees and toys that float on water will entertain your pets while at the beach. This will keep your pet active and entertained.

  • Ensure that you have your pet’s medication and updated vaccination books

In case of an emergency, ensure that you have your vet’s number close at hand.
