Regional offices ready to provide smart identification

JOBURG – Home Affairs offices in Joburg region are ready for smart IDs.

Gauteng Department of Home Affairs confirmed that 23 regional offices in different regions in the province were connected and ready to provide Smart Identity Cards.

Gauteng provincial manager Albert Matsaung urged residents to fully use the service made available to them.

“In Johannesburg region we have connected all the offices, in Ekurhuleni we are left with one to connect, with three in Tshwane, Sedibeng and West Rand area,” explained Matsaung.

He further explained that Smart Identity Cards were available freely to all first-time applicants and residents above the age of 60.

“In Maponya Mall in Soweto and Germiston we have piloted offices dedicated to Smart Identity Card distribution,” he further explained.

Residents who want to migrate from the green bar-coded identity document to the smart one will be required to pay of R140.

“In the meantime, we are only offering those cards to South African citizens, either born overseas or here, and not naturalised citizens,” he indicated.

He elaborated there were some technical glitches delaying them to offer smart identity to naturalised citizens and when that process is done the department will immediately announce it to the public.

“Applicants do not need to take pictures with them when they apply. Everything is automated, we will go through the verification process just to verify if we have their information already,” he concluded.
