Young pupil represents SA in USA

FONTAINEBLEAU – A pupil jetting to California for Pama USA Abacus and Mental Arithmetic Competition.

A Grade 2 pupil from Laerskool Fontainebleau will compete in California, USA on 29 December.

Ethan Bester (8) is one of the 29 pupils who have been selected to represent South Africa at the International Pama USA Abacus and Mental Arithmetic Competition.

They are set to compete with fellow pupils from Malaysia, Taiwan, Hong Kong, China, Japan and USA.

Bester’s long journey started in May 2015 when he won first place at the national CMaths Abacus and Mental Arithmetic Championship for his level and age group.

His father, Morné Bester said Ethan came first and second at the regional and national competitions he participated in since he started at the age of four.

He said last year, one international event was cancelled due to the Ebola scare in Africa, so he is really looking forward to representing the country and competing in the USA event this year.

Besides maths, the pupil is also a star chess player who will be representing JHB Metro Chess U10 A team at the National Junior Chess Championships to be held in Cape Town in January.

According to his father, Ethan is a Star Wars fan and counting days to watch the new movie in the USA when it premieres within weeks.
