Jacaranda Avenue upgrade in Olivedale

OLIVEDALE – Property developer, Balwin, will upgrade the portion of Jacaranda Avenue in Olivedale to accommodate more traffic on the road.

Residents held a public meeting with Ward 101 Councillor Ralf Bittkau and Balwin Developers at the Olivedale Library on 1 December to discuss the development in the area.

This after the developers had agreed to upgrade Jacaranda Avenue. This project includes road widening, intersection upgrades and signalisation.

Residents were extremely concerned about the volume of traffic when the developers acquired the land to build a residential complex. Initially, residents objected to the development and insisted traffic on Jacaranda Avenue would become worse.

The residential development will comprise apartments with free eco-friendly appliances, prepaid electricity, gas and water.

Balwin Developers managing director Rodney Gray said they bought the land four months ago.

“We have done the studies with regard to the overview of town planning, proposed development, electricity availability and environmental considerations,” he said.

He concluded that he would submit all the reports to the City Council for approval.

Ward 101 Councillor Ralf Bittkau explained the developers were building 1 060 units and residents were worried.

“I arranged a meeting with the developers and told them that we have 200 objections from the residents about their developments,” he said.

He explained that the developers then agreed to expand part of Jacaranda Avenue into two lanes and that the project was part of the company’s social responsibility and was estimated to cost them at least R18 million.
