MALANSHOF - KJD Martial Arts students grade for the Olymoic sport teakwondo in Malanshof.

GrandMaster Eun Woo Lee hosted the grading for the Olympic martial art sport taekwondo on 28 November at the KJD Martial Arts studio in Malanshof.

According to Grandmaster Lee, the ceremony was held to test the skills of the students in order to determine if they are ready to move on to the next level.

Judging included the fighters’ patterns – ‘poomsae’ – which range from chan-ji, dan-gun, won-hyo and choong-moo.

These are fighting styles that are used in a four-way fight, the stances are upright, fast and short.

Students then went on to grade their fighting styles in full combat formation.

Grandmaster Lee (Kwanjangnim to his students) said he has dedicated his life to martial arts and used the sport to bring a positive change to the lives of many.

“Each student starts with a white belt and as they learn more, they are upgraded to belts of different colours until they reach black belt,” he explained.

He is a 9th Dan black belt in three martial arts, namely: taekwondo, hapkido and gumd.

He is also a 4th Dan in judo.

Lee said he opened the KJD Martial Arts club in May 2002 and created kwanjangdo, his own syllabus.

“In January 2013 I was awarded the highest possible qualification – 9th Dan in hapkido and gumdo in Korea,” he explained.

Craig Dawtney, one of the students, said he was grading for this 4th Dan and that he enjoys the sport tremendously.

He added that the sport is a great way to relieve stress and he will continue to practise it for as long as possible.
