Heat wave in Joburg

BRAAMFONTEIN– The City of Joburg offers useful tips on how to cope with the heat wave.

The South African Weather Service has issued a warning to members of the public that most parts of Joburg will experience high temperatures on 1 December.

Temperatures will reach highs of over 37 degrees, similar to temperatures experienced in October and early November. City of Joburg Emergency Management Services Robert Mulaudzi said that exposure to this kind of heat can easily lead to heat cramps, heat exhaustion or even a heat stroke.

Mulaudzi offered some useful tips to use during the heat wave:

• Keep indoors if possible

• Keep cool by drinking lots of fluids and wearing light clothing

• Cool yourself down in your swimming pool

• Children should wear hats and sunscreen

• Stay away from direct sunlight especially between 11am and 3pm.

In addition, Mulaudzi also said that hot and dry windy weather increases the chances of veld fires and people are discouraged from dumping their burning cigarette buds in dry grass or leaving open fires unchecked.

“During this heat wave I also advise the public to avoid direct contact with the sun by wearing a hat and using sunscreen. Don’t leave children or pets in parked locked vehicles and avoid alcoholic, caffeinated or carbonated drinks but rather hydrate yourself with water,” said Mulaudzi.
