Fire injures 6 and 120 shacks burnt

KYA SAND - six people were injured in a blaze that ravaged more than 120 shacks in kya Sand.

Two residents that sustained serious injuries in a fire that burnt down shacks in Kya Sand informal settlement during the night of 27 November were admitted to the Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital in Soweto.

Joburg Emegency Management Services confirmed that six residents were injured in the fire.

“Only two were admitted to hospital but four sustained minor injuries,” said the EMS spokesperson Robert Mulaudzi.

Some of the residents were assessing the damage caused by the fire on the morning of 28 November.

Although most lost their belongings, however some managed to save the little they could.

Other residents were seated in an open area with only their beds left.

Mulaudzi further explained that EMS would return to the settlement today to assess the damage caused by the fire.

“At this stage the cause of the fire is still unknown,” explained Mulaudzi.
