UPDATE: Joburg water attends to sewage spill

RIVERBEND – A large rock is discovered after the Joburg Water attends to sewage that was spilling into Pampoenspruit and the Klein Jukskei River.

Sewage water that was spilling into Pampoenspruit and the Klein Juskei River was reported on 22 November by residents to the Three River Residents Association and to Ward 96 Councillor Matome Mafokwane.

Representatives from Joburg Water arrived at the scene the next day to deal with the leaking sewage that had been spreading into the area since even before it was reported.

Chairperson of Three River Resident’s Association Charmaine Zambetti said that it is awful that Joburg Water took that long to deal with sewage leak after they reported the incident.

“Our main concern as residents is the effects incidents of this nature have on the environment especially during this climate change,” Zambetti said.

Councillor Mafokwane said that when representatives from Joburg Water arrived with the machines to deal with the spilling sewage, the machines they brought were not fit to deal with the problem.

Joburg water acting manager of Marketing and Communication David Sibiya explained that when their team went to the site they found a large rock in the pipe which made it impossible to clear the blockage.

“We had to resort to using a jetting machine to clear the line. The job was completed yesterday, late afternoon,” he said.

“I believe it would be better if the Joburg Water representatives come and evaluate the area first as soon as possible then they will know how to deal with the problem effectively. As I mentioned before, my main concern is getting the river back to its original state. I plan to make sure they come back to clear the damage done by the leaking sewage,” said Councillor Mafokwane.
