GALLERY: Local organisations you can help for National Disability Rights Awareness Month

JOBURG – Help centres for the disabled make a difference in the lives of the disabled.

As we commemorate the annual National Disability Rights Awareness Month, help make a difference in the life of a disabled person.

  • The following organisations need assistance:

The SA Riding for the Disabled Association (Sarda) Gauteng is looking for regular financial donations and volunteers to assists.

The Sarda Gauteng’s Julia Morris said volunteers are an important part of the association and are needed on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday mornings.

Morris said they also need donations to form a solid base from which all their monthly expenses can be paid.

She said this will allow them to ultimately utilise all additional funds raised to improve and grow the centre and its facilities for the benefit of their riders.

“The association’s operational running costs are R55 000 per month and escalating,” explained Morris.

The centre manager Mandla Mhlanga said people should not wait for annual bonuses only, but should be supporting them throughout the year.

“Our residents are not doing enough to assist disabled people, some feel it is government’s job to do that, but it is up to families to see that people with disability are well taken care of,” said Mhlanga.

He said it is not all about money, but also emotional support.

“The charity shows we are organising helps us a lot,” he said.

The centre caters for 40 disabled people.

  • Woodside Sanctuary, a home for the severely intellectually disabled is situated in Cottesloe.

Marketing and fundraising coordinator Gugulethu Mthethwa, said the greatest barriers people with disabilities encounter are other people.

She said the importance of disability awareness month cannot be over stated.

“It provides organisations like us the opportunity to educate people about the difficulties faced on a daily basis by those who have disabilities,” Mthethwa said.

She added that that people with disabilities should be treated equally, and society needs to be educated about children and adults living with disabilities.
