GALLERY: The body becomes a canvas

NORTH RIDING – Artistry goes beyond just the simple paint brushes on paper at this year's Photo and Film Expo

The Photo and Film Expo which was held on 19 to 23 November at the Ticketpro Dome had numerous exhibits and one of them was an amazing exhibit of body painting.

Mnandi Joubert, a 22-year-old body art enthusiast, was the winner of The Body Incorporated, Photo and Film Expo, body painting competition.

Joubert said that while growing up, family and friends saw her knack for make-up and urged her to do it professionally though she was quite reluctant to pursue it as a career.

One day her sister invited her to spend the day with her at the film school where she studied. It was on that day, she said she realised she wanted to be involved in the film industry.

“Make-up makes me want to explode with excitement,” said Joubert.

The Malanshof resident said that she loves that her work enables her to meet and talk to like-minded people.

“There is nothing I would want to change about what I do,” said Joubert. “My work does not confine me to working in one thing, I can work on film sets and later get a bride ready for her big day, it encompasses everything.”

Joubert urges anyone with a dream or vision to expand on their understanding of their field and to be well aware of what is it expected of you.

“Talent and drive will get you where you want to be,” said Joubert.

To prepare for the competition she said competitors were told about it three months in advance and were given a list of themes to choose from.

“When I practised at home I completed a body paint in 11 hours,” said Joubert.

On the day, she explained that the competitors were given only five hours to complete the body painting with only the hair of the model having already been styled.

“It is really cool for the audience to see the whole process of the artistry,” said Joubert “When it is all finished they look with awe at all you have created and it’s great to see their reaction.”

The adept artist said that she has hopes of one day opening a school that encourages creativity and equips students with the knowledge they need to succeed in this industry.
