How to report a missing person

HONEYDEW – Know how to report a missing person and the required information.

Honeydew Police confirmed that a four-year-old boy who went missing on 11 November in Wilgeheuwel was found safe and unharmed.

Police warned that there was no waiting period before reporting a missing person. Residents should swiftly go to their nearest station and report a missing person.

Honeydew SAPS spokesperson Warrant Officer Karen Jacobs explained that when reporting a missing person, residents need a clear, recent photograph and all basic information of the missing person, as well as the exact circumstances of his/her disappearance in order to enable the police to assist.

“To assist the police when reporting a missing person, know the schedules and movements of loved ones and family members know your children’s friends. Make a point of remembering the clothing they wear. This information is essential for the investigation,” WO Jacobs explained. When a missing person is found or returns home voluntarily residents should return to the police as soon as possible and report the person’s safe return.

It is important to the police as this will help them to cancel the information on their records.

Parents should take the following into consideration:

Do not wait 24 hours before reporting your child missing – no matter the age.

Always keep a recent photo of your child.

Teach your child their address and your phone number.

Teach your child never to trust strangers and explain to them what a stranger is.

Make an effort to know your child’s friends and where they stay.

Talk to them about possible danger situations and what they should do when being faced with this type of situation.
