GALLERY: Walk to raise awareness

JOBURG – Sisters with Blisters walk sees many show their support against gender-based violence.

The Sisters with Blisters walk took place on 21 November at Steyn City in Fourways where about 5 000 people from all over Joburg participated in a 5km walk to show their support against abuse.

The 10th annual walk, which was hosted by 1st For Women was held on a glorious day. Each participant came ready to support a change in society, which was quite noticeable from the overwhelming number of participants from the public with the accompaniment of their canine companions.

1st For Women executive head, Robyn Farrell, said that it was a great turnout of people and that it was great to see everyone walk for a cause.

“It was great to have men in the walk, as they are mostly the main culprits when it comes to violence,” said Farrell. “Having them here shows they know that men need to change how they treat women.”

Farrell further divulged that such events give women the confidence they need as they now know that there are people and oraganisations out there ready to help and assist them should they need any.

Deputy Minister of Social Development, Hendrietta Bongopane-Zulu, also attended the event and said that the event was amazing and it gave hope. “When you see a day like this, it shows that we are speaking out about gender-based violence,” said Bongopane-Zulu.

Zulu also took the chance to talk about the government’s new temporary shelters called White Door Centres of Hope that give accommodation and basic needs along with counselling to abused women. She further explained that the launch of these centres around the country are to promote the integrity of vulnerable women and children.

Among the walkers was South African singing sensation Nàdine who said the day was lovely and was complemented by the beautiful Steyn City scenery.

“It’s necessary to have awareness events like these,” said Nàdine. “We can all affect change through such events and seeing the support that comes out from the community is just inspiring.”
