Spruit cleaning in Bordeaux

BORDEAUX – Residents clean the section of the river behind Old Parktonian Sport Club to ensure that public spaces were more accessible.

Scores of residents from Hurlingham and Craighall Park cleaned the section of the river behind the Old Parktonian Sport Club on 14 November.

Spruit cleaning was done in an effort to ensure that public space was clean and more accessible to residents.

Vagrants who were staying at the river were advised to seek alternative accommodation and vacate the area as it was established that they were mainly contributing to the litter in the area.

Hurlingham Resident’s Association environmental representative, Gerrit Fourie, explained that they asked vagrants to clean up the area several times.

“We then decided to clean this open space on our own. These people make homes here and are littering the area,” said Fourie.

Randburg SAPS also assisted the residents with cleaning, especially asking the vagrants to vacate the area as it was not suitable for human habitation.

“We are here to ensure that residents are not threatened while cleaning the area,” said Randburg Police spokesperson Constable Stanley Bopape.

Andrew Glencross, a resident of Craighall Park, explained that the number of vagrants occupying the space was increasing at an alarming rate.

“Most of the people who stay here just do recycling for a living. We advised them numerous times that the place was not good for their health but they insisted on staying here,” said Glencross.
