Symphonies for a good cause

PARK LANE – Funds will give the kitchen at Ekklesia Park Home a much needed upgrade.

A resident of Ekklesia Park Retirement Home has taken an active step toward raising funds to update the home’s kitchen by buying new appliances and replacing broken tiles.

Marta Swallow, a resident and organiser of the concert, which will help to raise funds for this cause, is very excited about the concert.

The concert will be featuring the Rand Symphony Orchestra alongside soloist Canadian pianist, Pierre-André Doucet.

“Even children will be able to come to the concert, seeing that it will be light classical music that the orchestra will play,” said Swallow.

The concert came as a surprise. According to Swallow, the home is part of the Dutch Reformed Church, Randburg South’s congregation.

Annually this church is the venue for a concert by the Rand Symphony Orchestra.

“I asked them if they could give their proceeds to the home and they said yes. We are lucky the residents get to watch a show and then get the money for our kitchen,” said Swallow.

According to Minda van Niekerk, head at Ekklesia Park, the home currently has 161 residents, ranging from completely weakened patients to residents who can still care for themselves.

“We concentrate on active aging. Our residents take part in games, music events and fancy dress days,” said Van Niekerk.

She said further that being able to upgrade the kitchen will mean that they can prepare even more delicious food for the residents.

Ekklesia Park would like to invite members of the community to attend the concert on 21 November at 3.30pm at Randburg-South DR Church hall, 41 Malcolm Avenue, Blairgowrie. “You can listen to quality music at a fraction of the normal price,” said Swallow. The prices for the tickets are R100 and R80 for pensioners and students.
