The Gauteng MEC for Department of Human Settlements and Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs Jacob Mamabolo has called for a special meeting on water and sanitation campaign.

This after it was established that more than 120 million litres of water were wasted annually as a result of leaks.

“We obviously got that information through the monitoring system of Rand Water,” said MEC Mamabolo.

The meeting will be held in Joburg on 17 November and it will include members of mayoral committees (MMCs) from the municipalities responsible for water distribution.

This would include City of Johannesburg and Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality.

“We have not yet found the venue but the meeting will be held in Johannesburg,” Mamabolo explained.

According to the MEC, they would also be launching the War Against Water Leaks Campaign to help save water.

“We will discuss the strategies on how to enforce water control,” he added.

Mamabolo indicated that Rand Water, which is also expected at the meeting, would give them a report on the latest developments on the water crisis.

He explained that the National Department of Water and Sanitation as well as Eskom will be part of the meeting.

“We need to find strategies that will ensure that residents are using water sparingly. We need people to manage water resources,” he concluded.
