FERNDALE – Councillor appeals to residents to report smart meter problems.

Ferndale Village Resident’s Association (FVRA) held its Annual General Meeting on 31 October at Liberty Church in Ferndale. Among the issues discussed were security awareness, City Power smart meter glitches and some of the plans for next year.

Ward 104 Councillor Mike Wood advised residents who have problems with City Power smart meters in his ward, to report it at Randburg Walk In Centre.

Councillor Wood explained that residents should produce their meter number, account number and make sure they get the reference number when they report the problem.

“Most residents are receiving exorbitant bills. We have so many complaints from residents about the smart meters,” explained Wood.

Meanwhile, Allan Millard of 42nd Precinct Security warned residents to check alarms, test their back-up batteries and to check if their motor gates were working.

Millard appealed to the residents to get to know their neighbours and participate in the community’s meetings.

“We are encouraging residents to know at least five neighbours and communicate with them,” he said.

FVRA chairperson John Thorby emphasised that the association wants the residents to participate more often.

FVRA promised to continue with its security drive and endeavour to recruit more residents to participate and increase membership in 2016 as proposed by Thorby.

“Instead of relying on Pikitup to collect our refuse bags, we must also consider recycling. It will eventually help us get rid of trolley guys,” said Thorby.

He warned residents to be more cautious of suspicious activities and always be vigilant.

Randburg SAPS Sector 3 manager Constable Gerry Maluleke stressed that community meetings were significantly important to residents.

“Residents should get involved with the resident associations (RAs). That will help them get information,” Const Maluleke explained.

According to Const Maluleke, there were residents who always complained and did not know City bylaws since they were not attending meetings.

“Now that we are approaching the festive season it is advisable for residents to know that at this time of the year the rate of crime usually increases,” said Const Maluleke.
