LYME PARK – St Stithians hosts a stellar invitational water polo tournament that filled the stands.

St. Stithians College, supported by the Maitland Group, hosted the world’s largest school’s water polo tournament on 22 to 25 October.

The annual event, which is seen as a festive one, always has a healthy turnout with large numbers of schools joining.

Participating in the tournament were the girls’ preparatory, boys’ preparatory, girls’ college, and boys’ college.

Lethabo-Thabo Royds, communications coordinator for St Stithians, said that they are always elated to see schools from outside of South Africa attend the tournament.

“We are also happy to have had schools from Zimbabwe attend,” said Royds.

“Two of the schools that participated are listed in the top three of their groups at the event.”

She added that on the day, a number of games were played concurrently to fit in over 200 games over the four days

The winners for each tournament are as follows:

First place junior girls, Reddam House (CPT); second, Chisipite Senior School (Zim); third, Girls Preparatory Bulawayo (Zim).

First place junior boys, Reddam House (CPT); second, Ridge School; third, St David’s Marist Brothers, Inanada.

First place senior girls, Reddam House (CPT); second, Pearson High School; third, Stirling High School.

First place senior boys, St John’s College; second, Clifton School; third, Glenwood High School.

Royds also commended the level of sportsmanship shown throughout the tournament.

“There was great sportsmanship. Each of the teams shook hands after each game, we had our boys’ college senior team cheering for our girls’

college senior team in the final game and vice versa,” said Royds.

She concluded and said many of the polo players supported games played by other schools and they received compliments from people who enjoyed the tournament.
