COSMO CITY– The community of Itsosenng celebrates the renaming of the new housing development, Malibongwe Ridge.

The Born with Dignity event took place on 15 October, hosted by Codevco, a subsidiary of JSE listed Construction Group Basil Read.

The event celebrated the community of Itsoseng, soon to be renamed Malibongwe Ridge, which is situated close to Cosmo City, which will soon have affordable new housing developments.

The event was attended by members of the community, government officials and stakeholders where the day was filled with a celebration of culture and heritage.

Junior development manager for Malibongwe Ridge Christel Karadimos said the aim of the new developments is to accommodate people from Istoseng Informal Settlement.

Karadimos explained that residents will reside in a complex. People who do not meet certain requirements, such as those without an income or who do not live in Itsoseng, will receive separate accommodation. “Elderly citizens not able to use the stairs are allocated simplexes (normal houses),” she said.

Codevco was assigned to complete the housing project on behalf of the Gauteng Department of Local Government and Housing and the City of Johannesburg.

City of Johannesburg strategic support advisor Bongani Nkosi said that society must never forget that they have a moral obligation to realise the dreams and aspirations of the poor.

“Through special activities, such as this, we are able to raise awareness of the need for safe, dignified and inexpensive shelters for the marginalised,” Nkosi said.

Guests were taken on a guided tour on tuk-tuk transportation to the Malibongwe Ridge project to see the new developments, where the Itsoseng community welcomed them.

The residents of this informal settlement got the opportunity to partner with Basil Read in building the new housing developments.

Itsoseng resident Amos Mukwevho started building houses on Malibongwe Ridge in 2013. He said that he enjoyed working together with Codevco, which invited residents to help build the new housing developments.

Mukwevho is one of many residents who registered at the Malibongwe Ridge Development to be part of the beneficiary list who are registered to be tenants next year.
