UPDATE: Aggressive protesters demand RDP houses

KYA SAND - Aggressive protesters throw stones and rocks at police, police respond by firing rubber bullets.

An aggressive group of people from the Kya Sand Informal Settlement are protesting, which led JMPD and the Douglasdale Police to close-off some parts of Witkoppen Road and Malibongwe Drive on the morning of 12 October.

Community members burned tyres and threw stones at police, however, the men in blue responded with teargas.

Residents claimed that they are striking against the demarcation of their ward, Ward 96 and governments failure to provide them with RDP houses.

“The councillor is not allowed here, he is full of nepotism. He does not want to work with the community. He works with his political party and he does not give the community the necessary information. So he will not be allowed here,” said one of the residents, Victor Mathole.

Community leader Bill Modikwe said that if the government move Msawawa and Kya Sand Informal Settlements to Ward 113, most residents will not benefit from the project in Ward 96.

He explained there is a RDP project at Lion Park and the residents would not benefit from this project.

Residents are complaining it has been 20 years they had been waiting for houses. The government apparently promised them houses but even today there are still staying in the shacks.

“We are going to hand over the memorandum to the MMC for Housing and MEC for Human Setttlement,” Modikwe said.

The MMC for Housing is expected to arrive soon, the residents will then hand over their memorandum.
