Refilwe Community Project hosts a Family Fun Day

LANSERIA - Refilwe's Fun Day encourages families to work together and support charities.

Refilwe Community Project hosted a Family Fun Day where nearly 500 people participated and enjoyed a craft market.

The event took place on 4 October at the Old MacDonald’s Party Farm in Lanseria.

Some of the day’s live entertainment included a dance show and competition by the Ministry of Dance, a fashion show by the Miss Molly/Benjamin Brat clothing line, and a family challenge by Stop Hunger Now.

Families were also encouraged to work together to see who could pack the most prepared meals which support underprivileged preschools throughout South Africa.

Refilwe Pre-School principal Debbie McCrystal said they were grateful to everyone who helped out on the day, including their MC Al Prodgers, MGG Sound and children of Crawford College.

McCrystal said all the funds raised throughout the day will benefit the pre-school, offering quality education to 83 children from informal settlements around the Lanseria area.

The principal explained that the pre-school was established in 2010 by her father Lawrence McCrystal and niece Melissa Beachy-Heab.

“But I took over in 2011 when I came back from overseas,” said McCrystal.

According to the project’s website, Refilwe Community Project was founded in 1991 by Jean Stewart and Yvonne Jacques as a Christian-based community development initiative to spread the Gospel of Jesus Christ among poor people in the Lanseria area.

Stewart, a professional nurse and Yvonne a pastor, started the healthcare clinic in order to assist and help meet the needs of the poor people in Lanseria.

From 1991 to 2005 they established a primary healthcare clinic which incorporated home-based care and tuberculosis management programmes, a hospice, a school and a shelter for abandoned children.
