GALLERY: Waste collectors use highway as a loading point

STRIJDOM PARK – Waste collectors are accused of using N1 highway as loading zone for their waste refuse, which could pose danger to motorists.

A truck belonging to Remade Recycling was seen on the N1 highway used as a loading zone for plastic refuse supplied by trolley men.

It is alleged that this is a regular occurrence in this area, about 100 metres from the Malibongwe Drive on-ramp travelling towards Fourways.

“When full, the truck just drove onto the motorway and nearly caused an accident with me and other road users,” complained a motorist.

He explained that the use of N1 as the loading point was not only dangerous to the operators but caused the influx of trolleymen on the highway prompting a further hazard.

“Surely these trolley operators are not allowed to use the highway. To use the highway I have to have a licenced vehicle and an e-tag,” he added.

Remade Recycling regional manager Stephen Towsen explained that steps were already taken to address the matter and to prevent it recurring.

He further said that the method adopted was inappropriate and the company apologised for any inconvenience caused.

“Once the driver leaves our premises it is impossible to manage every moment of the trip, and a certain amount of trust is placed on our employees, but the public’s assistance makes it easier for us to address these transgressions,” Towsen said.

He indicated that the company introduced a system that seeks to assist waste collectors by collecting their waste at a point where they will not push it kilometres to a recycling plant and be exposed to the traffic and other abuses.

He said waste collectors have crossed the highway, at huge risk to themselves all in the endeavour to make an honest living.

He pointed out,“Although the collectors at times seem to be a hindrance to the general public, collectively they contribute enormously to our environment by reducing waste to landfill and the subsequent generation of methane gas.”
