Murder increases by 10.4 per cent in Gauteng

JOBURG – According to the latest crime statistics released at Parliament, the rate of Murder in Gauteng province had escalated.

The rate of murder in Gauteng had increased by 10.4 per cent as indicated by the latest crime statistics for the financial year 2014/15, which were released on 29 September.

3 671 murder incidents were reported in Gauteng alone. The reported incidents increased by 346 cases as compared to the previous financial year of 2013/14.

National police minister Nathi Nhleko and National Police Commissioner Riah Phiyega released the national crime statistics to Parliament’s Portfolio Committee.

Sexual offences decreased by 3.5 per cent while attempted murder increased by 8.7 per cent.

Robbery with aggravating circumstances remained a concern in the province with 47 362 cases reported, and had increased by 11.4 per cent.

Common robbery increased by 11.6 per cent. Robbery at residential premises increased by 9.9 per cent and by 5.2 per cent at non-residential premises.

Theft of motor vehicles and motorcycles decreased by 1.1 per cent with 27 147 incidents committed in this financial year alone.
