GALLERY: Spruit Day 2015 a great success

BRAYANSTON – Residents came in numbers to participate in the Klein Jukskei River Greenbelt initiative.

The Blairgowrie Community Association partnered with 15 other resident associations and Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo Pikitup and other organisations for the Klein Jukskei Greenbelt Initiative on Spruit Day on 19 September.

Residents participated in numbers in a bid to clean up the environment on a Saturday morning. The community initiative involved residents removing litter along the Klein Jukskei River to make a pathway for pedestrians, bicycles and wheelchairs. Wood cutters from Wood-mizer also came to cut and process some trees that will later be used to build bridges over the river for residents to walk across. On the day, 45 indigenous trees were also planted at different locations.

Spruit Day 2015 project manager Cameron McGregor said that the point of the initiative is to create awareness about seeing the Klein Jukskei River clean, accessible and safe for everyone. The King’s College and Preparatory School also came to participate in cleaning up the environment.

Teacher Tracy Schikkerling organised the pupils to participate in the initiative. “Spruit Day is an opportunity to see the actual state of our environment that we teach them at school. Some of my pupils were so surprised at the amount of litter there is along the Klein Jukskei River,” she said.

Schikkerling said she encourages her learners to recycle goods whenever they can. “The New Covenant Church allows us to participate in a number of initiatives like collecting bottle caps, blankets and collecting funds to be donated to the less-fortunate,” she said.

Ward 115 councillor Chris Santana attended the event with his family, and added that there was a great turnout from residents.
