RAND PARK RIDGE – Juniors learn the disciplined game of rugby from a young age.

History was made this term at Rand Park Primary School with their first ever rugby team.

Coaches Brhyce Sumpton, Vukosi Babasa and Maynard Scholtz with their enthusiasm for the sport brought team work and discipline to the field.

The coaches started the interested players with a five-a-side game.

Here they teach them the basic rules and develop their skills. In the third term Rand Park Primary played in the Johannesburg Schools Association.

According to Sumpton, the community has come together in support of the team as Angelos Pizza sponsored some of the jerseys and parents and teachers have been so supportive.

“The most impressive is the spirit of the boys – their heart and passion and willingness to learn has made this year a huge success,” said Sumpton.

Babasa said, “It teaches them to work in a team or group, this too creates a sense of brotherhood among the boys.”

By playing at a junior level, the players are able to get into high schools that have great rugby programmes.

“This benefits them as they go to other schools with a skill set already in place,” added Babasa.

The Rand Park Primary School first team has had great success in their season, they have beaten other primary schools such as Wendywood, Craighall,

K E P S second team, played a draw to Northcliff and lost to Jeppe.
