Illegal dumping increases in Bordeaux

BORDEAUX – Residents who are renovating or building their houses allegedly use the cheapest and easiest method to get rid of building waste and it resulted in illegal dumping.

The piles of illegal dumping in the Delta Substation on Republic Road and the corner of View Road in Bordeaux have increased massively within a period of a week.

The property which is owned by City Power and City of Joburg has become a common place for dumping.

According to Ward 102 councillor David Potter, it has been established that community members are mostly to be blamed for illegal dumping.

“Those who are renovating or building must not use the cheapest and easiest method to get rid of building waste. Use a rubble removal company that is legit, complies with the relevant laws and who dumps at the correct dumping sites– not on the side of the road in our beautiful communities,” advised Potter.

Some of the residents, who were completely infuriated by the situation, wanted to know when the dumped rubble would be removed and how it could be prevented from recurring in the future.

“The illegal dumping taking place inside the City Power (City of Johannesburg owned) property along Republic Road is of serious concern,” said Potter.

He explained that Pikitup has been responding to requests related to illegal dumping at the site, but it was time for City Power to take responsibility.

“However, it is now time for City Power to take action against what is happening inside their property and which has spilled to outside of their property,” said Potter.

He further explained that initially, there was confusion about who owns the land but that has since been clarified.

“A request for action was sent to the senior manager of City Power and the entity owns the front piece of land which houses their Delta Substation and Eskom owns the back piece of land to which their transmission lines feed into their large substation,” Potter explained.

City Power  spokesperson Sydney Maphahlele indicated that the entity was coordinating the removal of the rubble with another City of Johannesburg entity.

Pikitup is yet to respond to comment.
