GALLERY: School gives back to the community

NORTHRIDING – School raises funds for a child with cerebral palsy.

Cooper College went out of its way to raise funds for charity.

So far, the school has raised over R48 000 for miracle baby Mackenzie who was born with cerebral palsy.

The funds will to help pay for her surgery and post operation, therapy and movement lessons.

Genevieve van der Vyver [www.coopersschool.com/], the school’s marketing and event manager said giving back to the community is one of the school’s prime goals.

Van der Vyver said the school is grateful for the overwhelming support from parents and companies who assist and also those who supply raffle prizes.

“At this school, pupils participate in numerous initiatives and they also help raise funds towards good causes like these,” she said.

She added that Cooper College had a “crazy hair and odd shoes” civvies day.

“Each child donated R5 to be able to come dressed outlandishly on the day. With support from mothers who bake and slave, we also sold an enormous amount of popcorn and cupcakes.”

She said at the recently August Women’s Day celebrations which took place at The Barnyard, money collected from ticket sales tickets went towards Mackenzie’s operation.

Van der Vyver said the Mallett twins were born very prematurely at just 27 weeks in 2013.

They were considered micro-preemies because they weighed less than 1kg and they were therefore, at risk of complications.

Mackenzie had a very rough neonatal intensive-care unit (NICU) stay.

Vyver said Mackenzie then developed brain bleeds because the blood vessels in such a tiny baby rupture very easily.

“This then lead to a fluid build-up of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) in the ventricles within her brain,” explained the marketing and event manager of Cooper College.

The school also collected food and blankets for charity, 4Paws, the centre taking care of abandoned and abused cats and dogs, also for Takane Kids Pre-school with 32 children.

Vyver said community members who wish to donate for Baby Mackenzie should contact the school.
