Homeless man on the streets again

KENSINGTON B – The homeless man is loitering around the streets of Randburg again and police are looking for him.

The homeless man Cavin Orr is back on the streets.

He was apparently spotted at the Checkers Centre in George Street and on the corner of Bram Fischer Drive on 31 August.

The man is apparently aggressive and does not usually accept any offer of help from the public instead he searches for food from dustbins.

He had been arrested by Randburg SAPS when he had gone to the station in search of food from the dustbin. Police arrested him after he refused to eat the clean food they were giving him, and took him to the Helen Joseph Hospital for an assessment.

Orr allegedly escaped from the hospital in Rossmore, however later, the hospital indicated that he was discharged.

After that incident, the Gauteng Department of Health spokesperson Steve Mabona explained that he was brought in by SAPS and was medically assessed.

Mabona indicated that, ” … the hospital found no illness, including mental illness, to warrant admission.”

“He was, therefore, discharged and given clothes on a humanitarian basis,” said Mabona.

He further explained that when police took him to the hospital, its management explained to them that it was a social case that needed to be referred to Social Services Department.

Sergeant Coekie Maphanga from the Randburg Police Social Crime Prevention Unit said they had not heard from the hospital ever since – if he was discharged or not.

She said police were looking for him since they found an alternative facility that can accommodate him.

She concluded that although most members of the public assisted with information, they could not find his family. “Most of the people told us that he was a drug addict and the information we got didn’t help us find his family,” Sergeant Maphanga concluded.

The police appeals to members of the public who have seen the homeless man, to assist them since they have found a place that would accommodate him until they find his family.
