Residents work together to clean Delta Park

DELTA PARK – 'The guardians of Delta Park' work together to clean up the park.

The ‘guardians of Delta Park’, as they call themselves, are residents of Blairgowrie who came together for clean-up initiatives at Delta Park on 29 August. The park is also home to the Delta Environmental Centre where there is a range of informative courses.

Cherie Swemmer, Karen Barras and Brent Nestler participate in the clean-up at Delta Park.

Member of the Blairgowrie Resident’s Association Gavin Frayne is involved with the security in the area, green spaces, clean-ups in the community including safety. He believes the association is the best in the whole of Johannesburg, but emphasised that more volunteers are needed to participate in clean-up initiatives of this nature.

“There was a poor turn out today but we hope to have more participants for future initiatives of this nature. It is done to benefit all residents and their families,” he said.

Frayne also said there is a strong association between the reduction of crime and clean-up activities, and believes not all people living in Delta Park are criminals. “We tend to find a number of lost or stolen items that we post on our Facebook page. People actually do come forward to claim their items,” he said.

Karen Barras has been a resident of Blairgowrie for the past four years. “Our community is quite down to earth and proactive in the community. We want to be part of solving the problems of our communities,” she said.

Frayne’s next project is to repair the gate around the park and to improve the children’s playground.
