Medical student (20) saves man’s life

DARRENWOOD – James Kiggell (20) is hailed as a hero by onlookers.

James Kiggell (20) may have saved the life of a man injured on the corner of Republic Road and West Street, Darrenwood, at 5.05pm on 1 September.

According to one of the first people on scene, Andrew Miller, who works for the speaker’s office at Randfontein Municipality, a man wearing jeans and a red T-shirt mysteriously fell over in the road, bleeding from his nose. Blood was also on the man’s legs.

Linden Police and bystanders assisted on the scene, but Kiggell did all the hard work.

“I was waiting at the robot when I saw the man in the road, and a small crowd gathered around him,” Kiggell said.

I stopped and started the C-Spine [holding the neck straight to prevent injuries]. I then called the ER24 and City of Joburg EMS ambulances.”

Kiggell kept the man stable for an hour until an ER24 ambulance arrived and rushed the man to hospital.

“If it was not for that young man [Kiggell] I don’t know what would have happened,” Miller said.

“The man probably fell into the road and hit his head. But we do not know because we are not doctors.”

“I think he is fine,” Kiggell said afterwards. “He is not in any life-threatening danger as far as I could tell.”

Onlookers stopped to shake Kiggell’s hand before leaving.

Kiggell is currently studying a degree in Emergency Medical Care at the University of Johannesburg.
