Delta Park hosts archaeological gathering

DELTA PARK – The annual symposium for the South African Archaeological Society came to Delta Park once again.

On 29 August the South African Archaeological Society Transvaal branch held their annual symposium in the Delta Environmental Centre in Delta Park.

The event aimed to connect academics to the community. It featured a full day of archaeological lectures. This year the focus was on world heritage, in response to increasing destruction, theft and sale of valued antiquities.

The symposium featured five lectures on United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (Unesco) world heritage sites. The five speeches included Professor Fanie Vermaak on the Valley of the Whales in Egypt, Tom Huffman on The Maya in Mexico, Benoy Behl on Ajanta Caves in India, Professor David Lewis-Williams on Chauvet and Lascaux II in France and Professor Coenie Scheepers on Tel Hazor in Israel.

Professor Cynthia Kros, independent scholar and former University of Witswatersrand lecturer, wrapped up the proceedings with her lecture: The Idea of World Heritage: a Critical Assessment.

The event also provided an opportunity to purchase new and second-hand books during the breaks.
