Red Ants remove illegal invaders in Wilgespruit
WILGESPRUIT – A group of illegal land grabbers have been removed off private property they forcefully invaded and built shacks on, by the Red Ants on 30 August.
Red Ants removed a group of people who illegally built their shacks on private land in Wilgespruit, Roodepoort on 30 August.
According to Honeydew spokesperson Warrant Officer Karen Jacobs the Department of Human Settlements instructed the Red Ants to handle the situation.
This was after a group of about 200 land invaders were warned on 29 August not to erect their shacks by the land owners Anna and Andries van der Walt.
The couple accompanied by the police stood a few metres away and watched as the aggressive group divided the land among themselves. Police said they could not remove them on 29 August without an eviction order.
It is understood that owners applied for the eviction and therefore the Red Ants were called to remove the squatters.
On 29 August the land grabbers were aggressive and cut the trees in the land to create enough space and shared the stands.
Two land invaders who refused to be named said they paid R500 each for the stands, but refused to divulge the name of the seller.
