GALLERY and VIDEO: Build a school build a dream

KYA SAND – Building a community starts first with building a school to educate the children at Kya Sand Pipeline Informal Settlement.

Ground was broken for the new school at Pipeline Informal Settlement on 2 – 22 August.

Judah Africa Community Development (JACD) forum in conjunction with Judah Africa Church, Rainbow FM, Barn Fellowship Church and other volunteers are helping build a school for the children of Pipeline Informal Settlement in Kya Sand.

Over 100 volunteers arrived on 22 August to lay cement, paint the classrooms and fix up the charity store bunker.

The news of this project spread so far that even volunteers from as far as Liverpool, United Kingdom descended in their numbers to help build the school.

“The initiative for the Liverpool volunteers to make the journey here cost them thousands of pounds,” said managing director of JACD Carla-Lee Kamp.

The volunteers are actually living at JACD; they have occupied any free space with pillows and sleeping bags.

The team also donated many full suitcases of school uniforms and clothing.

Some volunteers painted anything they could find, while others worked hard mixing and laying cement for the foundation of the school.

Some people provided services for the many volunteers such clean bathrooms, food and water.

Ward 115 councillor Chris Santana and Ward 96 councillor Matome Mafokwane also showed their support on the day.

The project is expected to take 10 days to build the basic structure of the school.

Marc Lombard, house manager at sober-living home, Healing Choices, took time out of his busy schedule to help.

“It’s my day off and I wanted to give back to the community by fixing the charity store bunker. I would like to create a good example for some of the residents at our home,” added Lombard.

According to Kamp, the education that will be offered at the school will be of high quality.

“We feel that by providing a safe and accessible place to learn, that the children of the settlement will embrace education and this will help further them in their lives going forward,” said Kamp.
