Randburg Sector 3 CPF holds AGM

KENSINGTON B – Residents warned to be vigilant and always watch out for suspicious activities in their areas.

The Randburg Sector 3 Community Policing Forum (CPF) held its Annual General Meeting (AGM) on 24 August at Randburg Police Station.

Despite what was regarded as a poor turn out, the new executive was elected with most members retaining their positions. Linda Bester was re-elected as the chairperson, while Conrad Fick returned to his secretary position.

Sector 3 manager Constable Gerry Maluleke warned residents to use their security measures accurately. He emphasised that residents need to always be vigilant and look out for suspicious activities. “Many incidents in our sector are instigated by residents themselves,” he said.

Const Maluleke explained that residents should refrain from leaving their windows opened at all times, since criminals were cutting electric fences to gain entry to residential complexes.

“Please watch out for this developing crime trend,” warned Const Maluleke.

He said burglaries were giving police problems in the sector and appealed to residents to cooperate and use their security measures correctly. “The criminals are always on the lookout for an opportunity to gain entry into your property,” he concluded.

The challenge of vagrants occupying open spaces in the sector and leaving trash at parks was also discussed.

Ward 104 councillor Mike Wood explained that residents should get more involved in their areas. “We cannot allow Ferndale to become another Windsor, overcrowded by vagrants,” said Wood.

Randburg SAPS Acting Station Commander Colonel Andries Odendaal said there were challenges, especially when removing the vagrants, but was adamant, “I refuse to say that we cannot do something about it”.

He emphasised that a combined approach to this challenge would prevail when security companies, police and residents work together.

Conrad Fick complained about the poor turn out and insisted that residents should get more involved in the CPF meetings. “Residents do not want to get involved but they are quick to point fingers, and that won’t help,” he said.

He concluded that Randburg SAPS was extremely cooperative with residents. “We have many departments where residents can help. It just needs your input,” Fick concluded.
