UPDATE: Pedestrian killed – matter to be investigated

RANDPARK RIDGE – The untimely death of an apparent journalism student will be investigated.

The case of the man who was knocked over and killed on the corner of Beyers Naudé Drive and Duiker Avenue, Randpark Ridge, on 11 August will be investigated.

It seems as if the victim was studying journalism at the Walter Sisulu University as his note books were strewn across the tar.

Driver of the red VW Golf GTi (who asked not to be named) was visibly shaken on scene. He said, “I was driving on Beyers Naudé Drive towards Lifestyle. I saw the man calling for a taxi on the other side of the road.”

He added, “I saw him trying to cross the road in a hurry to catch a taxi but he hesitated when he looked at the oncoming traffic, not sure of when to cross. As the robot went green, I drove off and then he decided to cross the road and that’s when it [the collision] happened.”

JMPD spokesperson Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar said, “A charge of culpable homicide will be investigated against the driver.”
