UPDATE: Cash-in-transit robbery, suspects at large

RANDBURG CBD – Police are still searching for three suspects who fled with two boxes of cash after shooting at the guards.

The suspects who allegedly robbed two cash boxes and shot at guards on 4 August at Cambridge Store in Randburg CBD, are still at large.

The guards who were shot during cash-in-transit robbery are still recovering in hospital.

“Police have launched a manhunt for three suspects driving a VW Passat with unknown registration number after they robbed and shot cash guards on the corner of Pretoria and Retail Streets in Randburg,” said SAPS provincial spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Lungelo Dlamini.

He confirmed that the suspects escaped with undisclosed amount of money.

Col Dlamini explained that the guards were taken to the hospital in a stable but serious condition.

“The guards were at the business premises collecting money when they were confronted by the suspects,” he explained.

According to Dlamini the suspects fired several shots at the guards before taking cash boxes.

“They then jumped into their vehicle and fled the scene. No members of the public were hurt during a shooting and the guards’ firearms were not taken,” he concluded.

Meanwhile police are appealing to anyone with information to contact Crime Stop at 08600 10111 or send a message with information to Prime Media Crime Line on 32211 at all times.

ER24 spokesperson Russel Meiring recalled that their paramedics, along with other services, arrived on the scene and found a cash-in-transit vehicle parked near one of the shops.

“Once treated, a critically injured patient was airlifted by the ER24 helicopter to a private hospital in Johannesburg while the second patient was transported by ambulance to a nearby hospital,” said Meiring.

Traumatised eyewitness Phathutshedzo Ratshitanga, whose car was shot by suspects, said rapid shots were fired while they were inside the shop. “We were not aware what was happening until we heard gun shots,” explained Ratshitanga.
