12 safety tips for women shoppers

HONEYDEW – Safety tips from Honeydew SAPS for women shoppers during Women's Month.

During the month of August, specific attention is drawn to women in our society. Women’s Day is celebrated on 9 August, and August is Women’s Month.

With the good however comes the bad. Spokesperson for the Honeydew Police, Warrant Officer Karen Jacobs shares a few safety tips to women while shopping.

12 Safety tips:

• Never leave your bag or wallet unattended in your trolley or on a shop counter.

• Beware of pickpockets and never keep your wallet in your back pocket.

• Carry your bags around your neck and diagonally across your body.

• Hide your cell phone and do not walk around talking on a cell phone.

• Put your wallet in an inside coat or front pants pocket.

• Avoid wearing expensive jewelry.

• Do not carry a purse or wallet, if possible.

• Even though you are rushed and thinking about a thousand things, stay alert to your surroundings.

• Avoid carrying large amounts of cash.

• Pay for purchases with a cheque or credit card when possible.

• Keep cash in your front pocket.

• Notify the credit card issuer immediately if your credit card is lost, stolen or misused.

So be safe during your next shopping experience.
